About Oak Hill Farm

Oak Hill Farm is a 400 acre traditional plantation property near Palmyra in Fluvanna County.  The Farm dates back to the 1780s and has gone through many changes ranging from a tobacco plantation and general livestock farm in the early years through to a successful and highly regarded Horse Farm under the Wiley Family of which Hugh Wiley was a member of the successful US Show Jumping Olympic Silver Medal Team in 1956.  Since being aquired by Cathy Cochran the farm as now returned to it's original use as a livestock farm specialising in producing high quality pigs and of course the Oak Hill Devon Herd.

Oak Hill Farm Devon Vision

To produce grass fed Devon who will improve the breed in future, both here and elsewhere.

Eight years ago while visiting friends in Devon England, I came across a herd of Red Devon on a farm near Crediton.  I was instantly taken with their beauty and stately form.  Having dispensed with horses at Oak Hill I needed a new direction and use for our grassy meadows and paddocks, and so began researching the breed.  Everything I found indicated that they would flourish in Central Virginia. Then low and behold, two of the biggest Devon breeders in the USA were located in my state.  The rest fell quickly into line.  My Devon have lived up to their promise and more: gentle, hardy, thrifty.  The meat we have produced from our steers is sensational.  It is nicely marbled, has a soft texture and fresh flavor.  All of this without an ounce of grain.  It's hard not to love them.
